ev3v4hnDid you have any Network Hardware Failures on the night time of August 3 2010? If so, the root trigger may well maybe have been owing to a photo voltaic storm that right strike Earth as noted commonly on the news.
NASA astronomers noted that on August 1, there was a sizable eruption on the sunshine that ejected positively billed plasma from it really is surface area headed specifically towards Earth. These billed particles entered the Earth’s ambiance a couple of times afterwards and collided with oxygen and nitrogen molecules creating what is identified as cosmic radiation.
Usually, the atmosphere of the Earth does a great job of deflecting cosmic radiation on the upper component of the ambiance. That is why the dialogue of electronics failures due to photo voltaic flares or cosmic radiation is generally constrained to satellites in orbit. Satellites are a lot additional probable to be hit with the radiation due to the fact they are greater up in the atmosphere.
When solar flares are larger than ordinary nonetheless, cosmic radiation can hit the Earth’s floor. Typically, the closer the gear are to the North and South poles, the far more inclined they are to currently being hit with radiation.
I was working for a company in Chicago a few years in the past when we experienced two Cisco Supervisor modules on individual Catalyst 6500 series switches die in the very same night. The hardware was found in two diverse places with fully distinct electrical power sources. Realizing the failure amount of this gear, getting two failures in one particular night time is incredibly unusual. After a prolonged investigation by the Cisco specialized help team, it was determined that the failures were due to a very similar photo voltaic flare that hit our internet site with cosmic radiation. At the time, I didn’t believe their clarification, but on the lookout back on it now, it is probable. In fact, Cisco has cosmic radiation documented as a single of the leads to of hardware failures. Network tools this sort of as significant conclusion switches are extra inclined to cosmic radiation in contrast to other electronics equipment because of the delicate electronics essential to transfer packets at this kind of a superior rate of pace.
So the future time you see information reports for photo voltaic flares heading towards Earth, retain a near eye on any hardware troubles you encounter on your community equipment.
