Mobile phone imports surge 63.40 per cent to $1.8bn in 11 months

The mobile phone imports in Pakistan have witnessed a massive increase of 63.40 per cent during the first 11 months of the current fiscal year (2020-21), compared to the import figures from previous year.

As per the figures shared by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the country imported mobile phones worth $1.860 billion during July-May (2020-21) as compared to the imports of $1.138 billion over the last year.

On the other hand, on year-to-year basis, the import of mobile phones also increased by 58.03 per cent during the month of May 2021 when compared to the same month of last year. During May, the mobile phones worth $175.501 million were imported, against $111.056 million in May 2020.

 

On month-on-month basis, the imports of mobile phones increased by 17.79 per cent during May 2021, as compared to the imports of US $148.992 million during April 2021, as per PBS data.

Automobile sector imports

The second biggest contributor to the countries imports was automobile sector, which witnessed a growth of 83 per cent during the period under discussion.

According to the PBS data, automobiles worth $2.624bn were imported in 11MFY21 as against $1.431bn in the same period last year, marking a revival in local automobile production as well as import of completely built-up units.

 

Out of these, import of CKD/SKD road motor vehicles was recorded at $2.180bn in the current fiscal year against $1.431m in 11MFY20, an increase of 86.72 per cent. Meanwhile, import of CBU surged by 81.29 per cent to $336.941m in 11MFY21 compared to $185.861m, over the last year.
